Fountains - Elegant, Tranquil And Beautiful

A fountain, in simple terms, is an architectural piece that pours water into a basin or jets it into the air. It could perform either the function of supplying drinking water or add beauty and decoration. Initially their purpose was only functional but they started to be used as decorative pieces in gardens and courtyards in ancient Rome. Today they are used to provide drinking water in places like malls, theaters, schools, colleges, etc. But they also have a very important ornamental value.

Lots of people have fountains in their gardens. They add a touch of elegance and tranquility. They block out background noise and create a serene atmosphere. They may be free standing or wall fountains. Often you have fountains that are installed in man made ponds or lakes. They also have recreational value in the form of splash fountains where people can play and cool off. Wall fountains have water cascading over a wall. You will also find small, artistic free standing or wall fountains inside some homes.

Fountains

Up until the 20th century fountains were dependant on gravity to shoot or spray the water. But now mechanical pumps are used. These are very powerful and can shoot the water very high. A good example of this advancement of technology is Jet d’Eau in Lake Geneva that shoots the water 140 meters high in the air. Tourists love fountain shows. You will see throngs of people visiting places like The Longwood Gardens of Philadelphia, Bush Gardens, the Bellagio in Las Vegas, etc to view the spectacular fountain shows. They even have special light effects when it is dark and the fountains dance to music.

Whatever type of water fountain you choose the basic parts will be pretty much the same – the pump, water conduit (like plastic tubing) and the water basin. Everything else that you see is for decorating and disguising the above mention parts. You will find simple fountains that just shoot up the water, ones that have some fancy sculptures, decorative basins and many more. They can be crafted out of cast stone, fiberglass, metals like copper or brass, etc. Wall fountains can be made of fiberglass, cast stone, copper, and even come in various finishes like weathered stone or sandstone.

Asian cultures have fountains that denote symbols of faith and luck inspired by feng shui and Zen gardens like bamboo, dragons, carp/koi (fish) and plants. The sound of water is said to be very good for meditation and many physiatrist’s and doctor’s offices have fountains to calm the patients. The great thing about fountains is they can be sculpted to match with any theme – for example – you can have a fountain with animal sculptures in a zoo or dolphins in an aquarium, flowers in a botanical garden and so on. You will also find endless designs if you want one for your home or garden. They come in various different sizes.

The important thing to keep in mind when you are picking a fountain for your home or garden is that is must blend into your existing décor and not clash with it. For this reason make sure you pay attention to factors like the color scheme, size, theme, etc. of the room or area where the fountain will be placed.

Don’t be disappointed if you love the sound of water but do not have the room for a fountain. You could consider investing in a wall fountain which is a great space saver and available in lots of sizes. Another great option is a tabletop fountain. They can be placed anywhere and are available in different themes and designs. Plus, if you love changing the décor you can easily change its place and arrangement to give a fresh look.

It is imperative in today’s world that we all give some thought to our environment. Keeping this in mind you could consider a solar water fountain. Solar power is no longer expensive and exotic. All it needs is sunlight and so the solar fountain must be placed in an area that has a good amount of natural illumination. A garden is the obvious choice but it could also be placed on an enclosed porch or patio or a greenhouse. You can even place it indoors if you have a big window with strong sunlight.

Fountains – freestanding, wall or tabletop, come in all price ranges. You are sure to find something that will fit within your budget.
